Liam Halligan - Artistic Director

Liam has distinguished himself as an original and highly theatrical director in his productions for Quare Hawks, of which he was founder-director. For Quare Hawks he directed and toured five productions introducing the contemporary work of the English playwright Philip Osment (‘The Undertaking’) and the Australian writer Andrew Bovell (‘Speaking in Tongues’). He devised ‘Cracked’ for three actor musicians based on the lives of women in St. Loman’s Mental Hospital in Mullingar. He commissioned new works from Philip Osment (‘Leaving’) and from Michael McCudden (‘Winter Came Down’).  He invited two very original Norwegian directors to Ireland to work with the company: the Artaud specialist Lars Oyno and the Butoh related choreographer Oyvind Jorgensen.

Other directorial work includes Goldoni’s ‘Mirandolina’, Wilde’s ‘An Ideal Husband’ and Colin Teeven’s ‘The Crack and the Whip’ (all for Galloglass), Pat Garrett’s ‘Pizza Boy’ and Eugene O’Neill’s ‘Anna Christie’ (Focus Theatre), John Kavanagh’s ‘The Ballynemid Business’ (Hawk’s Well Theatre), Barry Kinley’s ‘Small Box Psychosis’ (Andrew’s Lane Theatre and Edinburgh Fringe), Ioanna Anderson’s ‘Night Shift’ and Mary Elizabeth Burke-Kennedy’s ‘Whose House?’ (both Graduation shows for the Gaiety School of Acting in the Project Arts Centre).

Liam originally trained as an actor under Deirdre O’ Connell and Mary Elizabeth Burke-Kennedy at the Focus Theatre in the late 70’s/early 80’s. He went on to work at The Abbey, The Gate, The Lyric in Belfast, with companies like Cheek By Jowl, Birmingham Rep, Gate (Notting Hill), Leicester Haymarket, Oxford Stage Company, Northern Dance Company, The Lyric in Hammersmith, Greenwich Theatre, Contact Manchester, Derby Playhouse and Cheltenham Everyman. He was lucky enough to work with directors like Sir Hugh Hunt, Lindsay Anderson, Declan Donnellan, Phyllida Lloyd, Annie Castledine and James Macdonald.

For Storytellers he directed Mary Elizabeth’s adaptation of ‘Hard Times’ and Ivor Benjamin’s ‘Rashomon’ (Nominated as Best Director for an ESB/Irish Times Theatre Award). He became Artistic Director of the company in October 2004 and wrote and directed ‘The Dream of a Summer’s Day’, based on the early life and stories of Lafcadio Hearn. He has most recently directed 'Mushroom' by Paul Meade for the company and is currently directing The Turn of the Screw by Henry James which he has also adapted for the stage.

He is also an Acting Tutor and introduces the Gaiety School of Acting final year students to Shakespeare.
